Standards

Production

The standards for Demeter certification set the framework for Biodynamic agriculture and are legally binding for all producing enterprises. Products marketed with the Demeter trademark must be produced in accordance with these standards.

Biodynamic work requires a strong connection with the essential nature of the Biodynamic method, its principles, and its aims. Farmers are encouraged to develop their ability to observe and understand natural processes, striving for an ever-deepening knowledge of the connections in nature. Cooperative work in advisory associations, public events, magazines, and books are important sources of support.

The special body of knowledge on which Biodynamic agriculture is based, extending beyond practical and scientific experience, comes from Rudolf Steiner’s Agricultural Course of 1924 and the wider spiritual context of anthroposophy.

Processing

The Processing Standards for the use of Demeter, Biodynamic, and related trademarks describe the framework within which certified products are handled. Processing methods must maintain, and wherever possible enhance, the qualities of biodynamic raw materials. Only approved methods, aids, and additives may be used, while prohibited methods (e.g., genetic engineering, high-pressure processing, or the use of nanoparticles) are strictly excluded.

Wherever the word, stylised word, logo, or trademark “Demeter” appears in the standards, “Biodynamic” is implied. These processing standards are the criteria for the use of “Demeter,” “Biodynamic,” and other related trademarks.

Labelling

Demeter trademarks, including the Demeter logo, the stylised word “Demeter”, and the Demeter flower are legally protected. Ownership of these trademarks worldwide currently lies either with individual national owners. The long-term aim is for all ownership to be transferred to a common international  body.

The Demeter trademark may only be used by enterprises and businesses that:

  • Hold a valid contract with the authorised national organisation, or
  • Have a valid membership agreement that grants rights to use the trademark (e.g., producers in a regional working group).

The use of the word Biodynamic or Demeter on products, or in connection with products not certified under one of the recognised trademark forms, is not allowed.

Every use of the word Demeter and/or one of the registered Demeter trademarks in any form is considered trademark use. It is also considered trademark use if the impression has been created in the public domain (i.e., for consumers) that the products are Demeter-certified.
